What is an online form builder?

An online form builder is a web-based tool or application that allows you to create online forms using various presets and customizable templates. While some of these form builders are free, others are freemiums offering both free and premium versions. Obviously, the premium versions always come with more features and perks.

Below are some of what I believe are some of the best form builders for teachers and students. If you ask me which one of these form builders is my favourite I would answer: it depends on what kind of form I want to use.

If I were to create a quick form, Google Forms is definitely my go-to form builder. It is completely free and is integrated with other Google Drive services making it super easy for me to streamline my workflow. If I were to create professional looking forms, one of the other form builders would do the job, with a slight preference for Jotform.

1. Google Forms

Google Forms is Google's form builder. It is completely free and is integrated with Google Drive suite. Google Forms offers all the required functionalities to help you create your form within minutes. You can start with one of its pre-made form templates or create your form from scratch. Either way you will be able to add your own input by inserting fields and sections. Responses from Google Forms are automatically saved to Google Spreadsheet where you can access and analyze them the way you want.

Google Forms offers various features including the ability to upload files, various types of questions (e.g., short and long answer questions, multiple choice, checkboxes, dropdown, etc), import questions, add videos and images, make questions optional or required, convert questions into quizzes (e.g., assign point values, set answers, and provide automatic feedback), and many more.

Google Forms also enables you to control and manage how responses are collected. You have the option to send respondents a copy of their responses, allow editing responses after they were submitted, require respondents to sign in to Google to provide their responses, share results summary with respondents, and more.

2. Jotform

Jotform is another good form builder for teachers and students. I love the variety of pre-designed templates it offers. I find their templates visually appealing and professionally looking, definitely way better than Google Forms. Jotform offers an intuitive drag and drop editor to help you customize your form the way you want. You can simply drag and drop questions and form fields and place them anywhere in the form.

Jotform offers different sharing options. You may choose to publish your form as a standalone link or use an embed code to easily embed your forms directly into your blog or website. Each time someone responds or fills out your forms you will receive email notifications.

Using Jotform Report Builder, you can generate visually appealing reports based on your submission data. These include bar graphs, pie charts, form submissions grids, HTML texts and images. Visual reports can be shared online by using a generated link or embedded in websites or blogs. Additionally, form submissions can also be downloaded as Excel, CSV, or PDF files.

Typeform also offers a powerful quiz maker with a special feature called Calculator which allows you to ‘set up your own scoring system and save hours of correction and scoring. Other features provided by Typeform' s quiz maker include the ability to automatically send certificate of completion to students once they finish their tests, create custom messages for various responses and quiz results, insert multimedia materials into your quizzes (e.g., images, GIFs, and videos), include conditional logic functionality to provide students with more options when they choose a particular course of action, and many more.

4. 123FormBuilder

123FormBuilder, as its name indicates, is a web tool that enables you to create numerous types of online forms including surveys, polls, questionnaires, contact forms, event registration, order form, application form, and many more. 123 Form Builder offers an easy drag and drop form builder that makes it easy for anyone with no coding knowledge to create beautiful forms.
